UPCOMING CLASSES & CHALLENGE(S)
The Long Beach Casting Club will be offering:
Beginning Fly Casting “Teach-the-Teacher” Session
September / October 2024
The purpose is to train members to teach fly casting. Participants will be able to identify reasons for casting flaws and learn how to recommend ways to fix problem casts.
In addition to catching more fish and helping others, another side benefit of the Teach the Teachers Session is for participants to coach themselves toward better casting.
The Teach-the-Teacher Session is scheduled for:
Tuesday, September 10 at 5pm to 6pm (before the first Beginning Fly Casting Class).
The Beginning Fly Casting Classes will be on:
Tuesdays – September 10, 17, 24, and October 1 — from 7:00-9:00pm
The instructors in training will practice what they have learned and apply this training to the public casting program. | Class details > click here

CASTING CLASSES
Sure, you can watch a video, read a book or learn on your own. But nothing beats live instruction and hands-on practice under the watchful eyes of experienced instructors. Your learning curve will be much steeper and you’ll be so much happier with progress measured in hours and days instead of years.
FLY CASTING
Fly Casting is the Club’s most popular class and is the ideal starting point for becoming an accomplished fly angler. FFF Master and Certified Instructors, a lighted casting pond and years of teaching experience gives the class a well-deserved reputation for excellence. The first meeting is in the classroom with explanations of basic equipment. The remaining four weeks of instruction are devoted to casting at the pond. Expect lots of individual attention as you learn the pickup and laydown, false cast, roll cast and get introduced to mending. Even veteran casters improve their skills by perfecting the basics. Classes are free and open to the public. No pre-reservation is needed, just show up at the Clubhouse. The four-week classes are in August and September, 7:00 to 9:00.
by 7:00 pm. Beginning casting is a prerequisite for the members-only On-The-River Clinic.
“TEACH-THE-TEACHERS” PROGRAM(S)
This program does two things. First, it employs the talents of skilled club casters to grow the number of beginning-casting instructors: more instructors, more personalized help for students, more proficient, more confident beginning casters.
Second, it makes our good casters even better. Here’s how it works: experienced volunteers undergo four weeks of instruction under the guidance of master casters and certified instructors. They practice all the fundamentals—pick-up and lay down, false casting, extending and retrieving line, aerial mends, roll casts, etc., while being critiqued and mentored by our own experts. But that’s not all. They also learn how to diagnose various flaws and what corrective action is needed to fix them. Finally, they learn how to communicate those fixes so the student not only understands what to do but can actually do it. Everybody wins.
Master Casters Joe Libeu and John Van Derhoof lead all the Casting and Teach-the-Teachers programs

SPEY CASTING
Spey Casting lessons are offered twice a year and are designed to help beginners get started as well as enhance the performance of practicing spey casters. Spey is used for fishing large rivers for salmon and large trout such as steelhead. The technique is also used in saltwater surf fishing where conditions require the angler to cast larger or weighted flies long distances. The two-handed Spey technique allows more powerful casts and avoids obstacles behind the angler by keeping most of the line in front of the angler. The classes are offered twice a year on Saturday mornings. They run for two hours each and are free to the public.
